This round of interview is the first step to compare the CSFs and CFFs in the China and UK construction industries. This would help the experts in those two different construction industries gain insights about the weakness and the strong point of their current practice in the project performance evaluation. It can also improve and refine the preliminary findings on project performance evaluation, project managers’ leadership, CSFs and CFFS as well as build a strong practice foundation introducing those inputs from the experts.
A questionnaire survey is designed and developed from a comprehensive literature review of leadership, project manager’s leadership, project performance and its evaluation methods, as well as the consolidated findings from the interviews. This set of questionnaire survey is separately distributed among Chinese and UK construction practitioners, mainly targeting the management level of project managers and who work in contractors. However, it is also significant to collect other technical professionals opinions and other important stakeholders in construction, namely the client and consultant. In the end, there are totally 90 questionnaires collected, which is comprised of 45 from Chinese construction industry and 45 from UK construction industry. Questionnaires were distributed through emails, mails and posted on professional websites such as Linkedin. Some questions may not suitable for every respondents and have been skipped, therefore the exact numbers of responses to each questions may be less than 90.
The questionnaire is named “Effect of Project Manager's Leadership on Project Performance”. The objectives of the questionnaire are: (i) To identify the Critical Success Factors (CSFs) and Critical Failure Factors (CFFs) of PRC / UK construction project managers; and (ii) To explore such factors' effect on
http://m.elviscollections.com/Thesis_Writing/Accounting_Assignment/Engineering/ project performance.There are five sections in the questionnaire, the analyzed and summarized results are presented below, which are: (i) personal experience of respondents; (ii) CSFs of construction project manager’s leadership; (iii) CFFs of construction project manager’s leadership; (iv) Impact of leadership on project performance; and (v) Additional information. This chapter only presents the results, the discussion and interpretation of these results will be presented in the next chapter.
The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software is used to analyze the results of the responses. The following factors are presented, which are the mean, standard deviation and the rankings that is ranked according to the mean score. Furthermore, the one-sample t-test is adopted as a method to examine whether there are significant difference between the mean score and a pre-determined value which is the neutral level of 3. The significance level is set at 0.05. If the p value is calculated as less than 0.05, it means the examined item / statement is considered as agreed or strongly agreed by the respondents. In the importance type of questions in section four, the comparison value is also the neutral value of 3. Therefore if the calculated p value is less than 0.05, the examined item is regarded as important.
The findings are summarized below: in section 1, the respondents from PRC and UK can be considered as with relatively rich experienced and mostly come contractors. After completing this section of questions to collect their personal experience information, the next section explores the CSFs of project manager’s leadership.
